1879-1889

The Uhlich Evangelical Lutheran Orphan Asylum is incorporated in the state of Illinois, marking the
official beginning of UCAN as it’s known today.

1881

Thousands of Germans attend the orphanage’s festival. The orphanage is described by a reporter as providing “an adequate substitute for the parental home, that the youngsters are not compelled to exist in dungeon-like surroundings but live and enjoy themselves….” (August 1881)

 

1887-89

The Women’s Sewing Society gives sewing lessons to underprivileged children at various locations, including St. Pauls, to provide a needed life skill to boys and girls without families.
